The function of the stoma is to remove bodily waste such as faeces and urine.

The three main stoma types are Colostomy, an Ileostomy and a Urostomy.

It is best practice to empty the appliances when it is about one-third full to avoid accidents or “blowouts”.

Establish a routine.  The best time to change your appliance is when the stoma is less active and that is usually before breakfast prior to eating and drinking.

Everything you need to know is on the product list the Stomal Therapy Nurse ordered for you.  It is important that you learn: the type of stoma you have (it could be a colostomy, an ileostomy or a urostomy); the name of the pharmaceutical company supplying the product you are using; the reference code of the product is found on each of the boxes, and the size of your stoma.

Showering can give you a chance to keep the skin clean underneath the baseplate of any adhesive build-up. If your pouch has a filter, it is not waterproof and it is best to cover the filter with the sticky patch filter cover as supplied while showering with the pouch on.  Once finished, remove the filter patch.

*Some of the newer filters are teflon coated which means that a filter cover is no longer necessary.

Yes you can!

It is prudent to plan ahead.  Ask your Doctor for a letter detailing your condition.  Several of the Pharmaceutical companies supply Travel Certificates and/or Travel Cards, contact your Ostomy Association for this information.  The Pharmaceutical companies also have travel information on their websites which can be very helpful for new Ostomates wishing to travel both domestically and internationally.

The procurement of a Sunflower Lanyard can assist in airport staff identifying a person with a hidden disability.  Not available at all airports at present, but can be found if travelling through Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide or Perth airports.
