Joining the Association for Ostomates involves the help of a Stomal Therapy Nurse (STN) after surgery. The STN facilitates registration for the Stoma Appliance Scheme and selects suitable stoma appliances for you taking into consideration your lifestyle requirements. Your first order will be supplied once the application to join the Association has been lodged by the Stomal Therapy Nurse. This order can be collected from the Association’s premises or posted if requested. To access the Scheme, a compulsory SAS Access Fee must be paid annually, providing ostomates with essential stoma care supplies.

Guideline
Ordering Guidelines
Orders must comply with the Stoma Appliance Scheme guidelines. There are monthly or annual allowances for products supplied on the Scheme. The Association also has guidelines for sending in orders, date for monthly orders to be received, postage costs, and order processing times for collection or postal despatch.
Additional Supplies
Where clinical reasons require an ostomate to be supplied with more than the monthly allowances described in the SAS schedule, an Application for Additional Stoma Supplies for Clinical and Other Reasons (PB050) must be submitted to the Association by a Stomal Therapy Nurse or medical practitioner which clearly states the reason for increased supply, the additional items required and the additional quantity required.

Frequently Asked Questions
Explore our FAQ section to find answers to common questions.
What should I do if my appliance keeps leaking?
Constant leakage problems are not normal and should be seen by a Stomal Therapy Nurse. It is important to keep the skin underneath the baseplate in good condition. Some stomas are very difficult to pouch and sometimes it takes perseverance and improved technique to resolve the problem.

How do I know what appliance I am using?
Everything you need to know is on the product list the Stomal Therapy Nurse ordered for you. It is important that you learn: the type of stoma you have (it could be a colostomy, an ileostomy or a urostomy); the name of the pharmaceutical company supplying the product you are using; the reference code of the product is found on each of the boxes, and the size of your stoma.
Can you swim with a stoma bag on?
Stoma bags are waterproof, you can swim with the appliance you wear daily. If the pouch/bag has a filter, cover it with a filter cover. Remove the cover when you finish your swim. Some of the newer filters are teflon coated which means that a filter cover is no longer necessary.
